Improving consistency in renewals across TLDs

FAQ:

Q: What happens to existing TLDs that are part of the group that are changing that I already manage in my reseller account?

A: There is no change to existing registrations. If a domain was set to "Expire without notifications", it remains set that way. If a domain was set to "Auto-Renew", it remains set to auto renew.

After March 19, you will be able to set these domains to "Expire with notifications" if you wish. In that case, the registrant will receive expiry notifications as they do with other domain extensions. You'll also be able to explicitly renew those domains at any time during the life of the domain.

Q: Does anything change in terms of registering new TLDs?

Yes and no. By default, new registrations for the affected TLDs will be set to "Expire with notifications" consistent with other TLDs in OpenSRS when they are registered. You may also set them to "Auto-Renew" at the time of registration (like other extensions) or to "Expire without notifications". And you can toggle that status after registration.

Q: What's the impact on registrants of these domains?

Registrants of existing domains won't see any change. They benefit from the added flexibility of being able to renew the domain at any time. And you can offer the ability to set the domain to "Expire with notifications" which will send email notifications to the registrant prior to expiry, reminding them to renew their domain.

Q: Which TLDs are affected?

The following TLDs (including any third-level domains under that TLD e.g. .com.pl) are changing on March 19, 2013:

  • .ac
  • .af
  • .ag
  • .am
  • .cm
  • .ec
  • .fm
  • .gg
  • .hn
  • .io
  • .je
  • .la
  • .md
  • .mn
  • .nu
  • .nz
  • .pe
  • .pl
  • .sc
  • .se
  • .sh
  • .so
  • .st
  • .to
  • .tw
  • .nz
  • .pe
  • .pl
  • .sc
  • .se
  • .sh
  • .so
  • .st
  • .to
  • .tw

And also the following gTLDs:

  • .aero
  • .coop
  • .jobs

Q: When will these TLDs renew?

These TLDs will continue to renew at the same time as they do now - in some cases that is on the day of expiry, and in other cases it is within a window set by the registry. If a domain is set to "Expire with notifications" then the registrant will get notifications via email reminding them to renew the domain as appropriate.

Great news! Hope we can do something similar for .fr too in the future.

We'd love to do something similar for .FR as well, but that would require AFNIC to change the way they do things.

Any chance we could get .tc added to this list?

    Ken -

We haven't announced it officially yet (watch for an email next week), but we are reintroducing .TC domain registrations through OpenSRS starting March 12 along with .GR, .SX and .ORG.BZ. Pricing will be announced in the email.

    James.

Please note we've pushed back the launch of these changes by a week; this will now be official on March 19th.
