Transfer In Process

Transfer Process Prior to GDPR

The gTLD transfer process prior to GDPR implementation works as follows:

  • The reseller submits a transfer order via API, RCP Storefront, or other OpenSRS integration
  • OpenSRS sends a transfer approval email to the current admin contact listed in WHOIS for the domain
  • The admin contact clicks the link in the email, enters the authcode for the domain, and approves the transfer
  • The losing registrar will then send a transfer approval email to the admin or owner contact. The contact has 5 days to either accept or reject the transfer, otherwise it is automatically approved
  • Once approved, the domain is transferred to OpenSRS and the transfer process is complete

Transfer Process After GDPR Implementation

After GDPR is implemented, the transfer process will work as follows:

  • The reseller submits a transfer order via API, RCP Storefront, or other OpenSRS integration
  • The reseller now has the option to provide the authcode during the transfer order process.
  • If the authcode is provided and valid: the order is sent to the losing registrar with no transfer approval email from OpenSRS being sent. The losing registrar sends an email to the owner or admin contact to either approve or reject the transfer. If the transfer is not approved, it is auto approved after 5 days.
  • If the authcode is not provided: OpenSRS sends an email to the owner contact listed on the transfer order. The owner contact will click the link in the email, provide the authcode, and approve the transfer. The transfer is then sent to the losing registrar for processing.

Transfer Away Process

Transfer Process Prior to GDPR

The gTLD transfer process prior to GDPR implementation works as follows:

  • The registrant submits the transfer request at the gaining registrar
  • The gaining registrar sends a transfer approval email to the current admin contact
  • The admin contact clicks the link in the email, enters the authcode for the domain, and approves the transfer
  • OpenSRS will then send a transfer approval email to the admin contact. The contact has 5 days to either accept or reject the transfer, otherwise it is automatically approved
  • Once approved, the domain is transferred to the gaining registrar

Transfer Process After GDPR Implementation

After GDPR is implemented, the transfer process will work as follows:

  • The registrant submits the transfer at the gaining registrar
  • The gaining registrar will complete the transfer approval process on their end, checking to ensure the registrant has the right authcode
  • OpenSRS sends an email to the current owner contact on the domain asking them to approve the transfer
  • The owner contact has 5 days to approve the transfer, otherwise it is automatically approved

API Changes

The sw_register API call has been modified so that resellers can now submit the auth_info attribute during transfer orders. When this is included, no approval email will be sent to the admin contact listed on the transfer order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I required to make changes to my API implementation at OpenSRS?

Incoming and outgoing transfers will continue to function if you do not implement the auth_info field into your API calls. However, the transfer process will be faster if you do include the domain authcode as we will not need to send an approval email to the admin contact.
